The hotel is absolutely fantastic in so many ways; a complete hidden gem. From the minute you step in it has a feeling of comfort and cleanliness. The reception area is in the lovely old building, with beautiful golden stone. You then walk down a corridor before you suddenly step into a stunning open atrium that connects the old building to the new extension. We stayed in the "superior" room which is in the extension. The rooms are a nice size with a large double bed with good heating for the winter (we stayed in February). The other rooms are in the old building. Our room was on the top floor at the back (Room R) which has a great view of the city skyline (a bit of a bonus). The breakfast was served in a room in the older part of the building; all beautifully restored and with a view of the outside space (I forgot to say it has an excellent open space/garden). The breakfast is plentiful and varied, with hot food, cereal, cold cuts, toast and pastries (the people complaining about the breakfast must have only eaten one thing their whole trip!). The staff were also very helpful, making us Latte coffee (not put out so remember to ask!!!). The rooms don't come with a kettle, but if you ask you get one! (we did) Same with anything else I imagine. Only one word of warning; don't be put off by the drive up to the hotel. The other buildings on the road can look like a legacy of the 70s, but if you look closely you'll see everything is clean and some of those buildings are boutique shops and restaurants. We reckon that this is because the hotel is in one of the the up-and-coming locations. AND, having walked all over the city, we reckoned that this location was the best; not so tourist crowded but plenty of restaurants. And as I said, once you step into the building you are in a completely different place!

We were pleased to have chosen a hotel on the South bank (Gaia). The north, city side was still very busy and noisy in late October. The Caleway was near to World or Wine (WoW) and many of the Port Warehouses. We visited Taylors, which was well laid out and interesting. The hotel is also within easy walking range of good riverside restaurants towards the bridges. It is an easy 15 minute walk to N side, if you must. What we really liked about the Caleway was its architectural style. Our 2nd floor room had good views over tiled rooves to the skyline of the city N of the river. Breakfast was a good spread: Cereals, scrambled egg, bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes, or cheeses and cold meats, if required. Mini-croissants and pastel de nata not to be missed, if you have room! Bathrooms all clean. Coffee machine in the room not to my liking, but cold milk and a kettle provided on request. Just dont be put off by the unprepossessing street entrance. Its like Narnia once inside.

Everything was great. The view from the ground floor room was exceptional - through a full length window to the garden outside, with lemon trees and beautiful green lawn. Loved the little 'balcony' that takes you out 'into' the garden. The whole concept was super. The large open space of the foyer, beautifully decorated, the tiles and exposed rock in the reception, the cute honesty cafe and bar, the outside seating area in the garden. The breakfast was good, and the room very nicely decorated. The location in Gaia, across the river from Ribiero, made it easy to get to the river - 2 minutes walk. Then cross the bridge to arrive in Ribiero, about 15-20 mins in total. Or turn left at the river on Gaia side to access the cable cars to take you high above the city.

We really enjoyed the beautiful and quiet garden, and the beautiful interior of the hotel. And the location was perfect: not in Porto itself but on the other side, in peaceful Vila Nova de Gaia. But in walking distance from everything. The staff was very nice, very helpful, very professional. We mentioned to the staff, that some people (we) have parfume allergies, and that the washing powder is heavily perfumed. This is a general issue in hotels world wide, and this use of perfume in the surroundings is absolutely unessesary, and forces people to be exposed to it. (In my opinion it shoulf be regarded the same way as exposure to smoke). The staff immediately accommodated us on this.
